Lena Helton Pickens has been involved in public speaking since an early age. She participated and won speaking contests with the 4-H club and won oratorical contests while in high school. She was a Founders Day speaker at a Founder’s Day service while a student at Johnson C. Smith University.
She has been a guest speaker at several churches on various occasions such as Women’s Day, Grand Parent’s Day, Children’s Day, Missionary Day, and Youth Day. Among the churches have been the following: Logan Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME), Mowing Glade African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AME), New Hampton Presbyterian, Greater Providence Baptist, Saint Mark’s United Methodist in Charlotte and First Congregation United Church of Christ, Concord, NC
Other speaking engagements have included motivational speeches for youth at Logan Chapel CME and Friendship Missionary Baptist, Minority Achievement sessions at Newell Elementary, Day Care Graduation at former Children’s Palace, and 5th grade graduation at J.H.Gunn Elementary. A recognized storyteller, Lena has been a storyteller in elementary school classrooms and day care centers.
